Our current logo incorporates three images taken from the ceiling of our apse (altar area) which was designed by Addison Le Boutillier. These images are classic Christian symbols expressing the belief in the "reign of Christ". While in ages past these symbols may have represented a belief in the domination and subjugation of people of other nations, languages, cultures, and faiths by western-European Christendom, it is our belief that the reign of Christ is only, and best, understood when we live out the gospel with a profound and honest respect for others.
The symbols can also be seen throughout our online worship services.
Also known as the "Orb and Cross" this symbol from medieval times expressed a belief that Christ has authority over the entire earth. It expresses our belief that, despite all evidence to the contrary, almighty love is the most powerful force that we humans know and experience.
The Compass Rose is a navigation symbol indicating the four cardinal directions (north, south, east, west) and their intermediate points. In Christian symbolism it indicates the spread of the gospel throughout the world, but more recently it also expresses our need for direction in our lives.
It is also the official symbol of the Anglican Communion of which Christ Church is a member.
The crown symbolizes the belief that Christ is the ultimate power of this world. We continue to find this symbol helpful for many reasons, among them being...
- If Christ is the ultimate authority, then all other authorities are NOT the ultimate power in our lives and in the world.
- The crown also reminds us of the crown of thorns: that Christ humbled himself showing us the most extreme limits to which almighty love would go to win humanity.
