Confirmation

Confirmations at Christ Church

Confirmation is an opportunity to make an adult affirmation of faith, and through the laying on of hands by a bishop to embrace the presence of the Holy Spirit in one's life to guide, comfort, and empower us for the life of Christian service. People may be confirmed either as young adults or mature adults. The only requirements are that one has been baptized and that one desires to follow Christ in an intentional way.

Confirmation invites young people in grades 9 and above to claim for themselves the promises made on their behalf at baptism. Classes to prepare for Confirmation usually begin in the fall and meet on select evenings. A Preconfirmation overnight retreat at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center is usually part of this program.

Adults may be confirmed at any age. Some may not have had the opportunity (or the inclination) in their youth. Others may be new to the Christian faith or the Episcopal Church. Please speak to our clergy if you would like to consider being confirmed.

People who were previously baptized and confirmed in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Lutheran churches need not be confirmed again in order to be fully recognized in the Episcopal Church. They may instead be "Received" into the Episcopal Church as those who have already experienced the laying on of hands by a bishop in the apostolic succession.
