Preparation for Confirmation

Confirmation, according to the Book of Common Prayer, "is the rite in which we express a mature commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop" (p. 860).

The sacrament of Confirmation is open, therefore, to anyone who was baptized as a child but now feels ready to make a mature commitment to Christ, within the tradition of the Episcopal Church, or to anyone baptized as an adult but without the laying on of hands by a bishop.

Confirmation preparation for teenagers is currently offered on an every-other-year basis for teens who are at least in the 9th grade.

Ninth Through Twelfth Grade Confirmation Class Started in October 2023

Ninth through twelfth graders registered for confirmation class which had its first meeting on 10/15/2023 from 6:30-8:15p.m. For most participants, this class will culminate with making a mature affirmation of faith and receiving the laying on of hands by a bishop at our Service of Confirmation on October 5, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. Preparation for this sacramental rite includes attending confirmation class regularly, with few absences. Approximately eight sessions will held be on selected Sunday evenings. A Pre-Confirmation Retreat organized by the diocese may also be a part of our preparation. Other commitments and individual circumstances may make Confirmation impracticable for some of our youth. May we all be open to the countless additional ways, times, and places in which God reaches out to us.

Surveying the breadth of our faith tradition, including how it has developed over time, is a big part of the challenge we will be taking on in our sessions. We plan to facilitate active engagement with some of the key elements in our tradition by means of varied activities. We will also make connections between our faith tradition and our individual experiences and personal beliefs, as well as the broader culture around us. Through the give and take of learning and discerning together, we believe that all participants will some feel fresh energy in the spiritual dimension of their lives, both individually and in community with each other.

We wish to be sensitive to the broad range of learning styles of participants and also to the uniqueness of each person’s faith journey. We all get to know each other better as the class goes along, but feel free to get in touch with any information that you might want to share in advance.

The final meeting for the 2023-2024 confirmation class is planned for Sunday, September 29, 2024 (6:30-8:15 PM).
